Mt. McKinley in Alaska, originally known as Denali, "the Great One." .... "Lead me to the rock that is higher than I; for you are my refuge..." (Ps. 61:2-3)

"Who do you say that I am?" Jesus asked.  Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."  And Jesus answered, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! ... You are Peter (petros), and on this rock (petra) I will build my church..."  Jesus then began to speak of the rough road ahead. And Peter took him aside and rebuked him... "Get behind me, Satan!" Jesus replied. "You are a stumbling block..."
                                                (Matthew 16:13-23)

May these words of this Peter be like a rock,
not a stumbling block!

Like many preachers, I use a variety of styles. Starting in 2005, most of my sermons have been delivered without a manuscript. This development followed a visit to our sister congregation in the Dominican Republic, and the freedom of preaching extemporaneously there. I have now begun digitizing the audio into .mp3 files, so that as time allows, these sermons can be heard online. However, there are complete written worship services online to go with these sermons. This is how we pass along the info needed by our worship leaders every week, the majority of whom have access to the Internet. As there are nearly ten years worth of sermon manuscripts in these pages, you might find a message on a particular text or lectionary date in the indexes below. We still send the prayer list (the shared joys and concerns) to those in our fellowship who are unable to attend on a given Sunday, although we no longer - as in the past - send the sermon (or web-link for the majority of folks with email).
I generally follow the Revised Common Lectionary (a 3-year cycle of scriptures), but will often choose to go in different directions. Below are my sermons, listed beginning with the most recent. At present I plan a month in advance, and list the "menu" in the church newsletter.  - PLH    (click here to contact me)

All my sermons are indexed according to:
a) Scripture Text,   b) Lectionary Cycle,   &  c) Year Preached
There is also a site search tool.

For various versions of scripture,
see Online Translations of the Bible.
For a list of some of the resources I use, see my Bibliography.
Check out my index of Children's Time messages.

Read about our Hearing Induction Loop, a simple and inexpensive means of helping those with a hearing disability (and a hearing aid equipped with a telephone switch) to better participate in worship.

If you're interested, there's quite a number of great lectionary internet websites. To share just two, Sermons and Sermon - Lectionary Resources connects sermon pages from around the world (check out the Sermon Forum found there). The Text this Week provides all sorts of online resources for understanding the lectionary texts (The weblog connected to this site is great!). Though it may work better with the Catholic variations, see also a daily Bible reading schedule based on the common lectionary. Visit other sermon pages by Church of the Brethren pastors, or explore how Brethren approach Biblical Inspiration and Authority. Our denominational bulletin covers are tied to the RCL in this way. Branching out beyond Brethren or even Protestant boundaries, try out a Daily Prayer Online, directed in Jesuit fashion. Thinking outside the box, consider "The 'Un-common' Lectionary Project" from Tom Bandy of Easum Bandy Associates.
Two places I turn for help in pastoral and congregational growth are The Alban Institute (I've attended a number of their seminars - top quality!), and Net Results - both produce excellent magazines, approaching similar issues from different perspectives. Check out how the Church of the Brethren is dealing with "Ethics in Ministry Relations" (approved in 1996 by Annual Conference, the highest authority in our denomination).
